Chrysler Recalls 17,000 Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid Minivans Over Battery Fire Risk

1 source

Chrysler has recalled approximately 17,277 Pacifica Hybrid minivans from 2020-2022 due to a battery fire risk linked to cells from an LG Energy Solution assembly line, with four known fire incidents reported. The company is advising owners to park vehicles outside and away from structures, and to stop charging until repairs are completed. The recall addresses a potential thermal runaway issue in high-voltage battery packs that could pose fire hazards even when vehicles are parked or stationary.

Chrysler issued a recall for select 2020-2022 Pacifica plug-in hybrid electric vehicles equipped with high-voltage battery packs manufactured with cells from an alternative LG Energy Solution assembly line. According to NHTSA filings, four fire incidents have been linked to these batteries, which can experience internal failures resulting in thermal runaway. Chrysler estimates that approximately one percent of the recalled vehicles contain the defective cells. The company is advising owners to park vehicles outdoors away from buildings and refrain from charging until repairs are completed. The remedy involves installing updated software in the Battery Pack Control Module for enhanced monitoring, followed by battery pack inspection and replacement of defective units. Chrysler is also providing an unlimited-duration, unlimited-mileage warranty extension for customers experiencing battery-related warning messages connected to this defect. Neither Chrysler nor LG Energy Solution has definitively identified the underlying cause of the failures despite months of investigation.
