Open-Source Raspberry Pi Project Recreates Retro VCR Interface for Modern Media Playback
Developer Anthony Caccese has released 240-MP, an open-source Raspberry Pi project that creates a vintage VCR-style interface for playing local media files and Plex libraries on CRT or modern screens. The project runs on Raspberry Pi 4B, 3B+, and 3B models and supports navigation via remote control or keyboard. The tool addresses nostalgia for older display formats while enabling modern streaming functionality.
Anthony Caccese, a principal product lead at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has published 240-MP, an open-source GitHub project that combines retro VCR aesthetics with contemporary media playback capabilities. Built on the command-line media player MPV, the software provides text-based menus mimicking vintage VCR interfaces while supporting playback from local files, USB drives, network shares, and Plex servers. The project works with both legacy CRT televisions via composite cables and modern displays via HDMI, though users must configure their output preference in advance. Navigation is handled through either remote control or keyboard input, with features including folder navigation, episode selection, audio and subtitle track switching, and playback looping. Caccese has tested the software on Raspberry Pi 4B, 3B+, and 3B models and plans future modules supporting Jellyfin and RetroArch, while encouraging community contributions through the fully open-source repository.

Anthropic CEO Warns AI Job Loss May Be 'Intrinsic' to Technology, Proposes Wealth Redistribution
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a policy essay arguing that significant job displacement from AI may be an inherent feature of the technology rather than a temporary adjustment problem. He previously warned AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs within five years and push unemployment to 10-20%. Amodei proposes government interventions including wage insurance, workforce training, and potentially universal basic income funded by taxes on AI companies to offset permanent job losses.
