Woman who witnessed mother's 2014 murder as child tracks down killer in Mexico using social media

1 source

Kiany DeJesus, who was 11 when her mother Emilia Ignacio was killed in Maryland in 2014, used social media to locate the killer, Juan Miguel Roman-Balderas, who had fled to Mexico and started a new family. Roman-Balderas was arrested and pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, receiving a maximum sentence under his plea agreement at a sentencing hearing on Tuesday. DeJesus's efforts to find the killer and deliver a victim impact statement represent a rare case of a family member playing a direct role in locating a fugitive decades after a crime.

Kiany DeJesus was 11 years old when her mother, Emilia Ignacio, was killed in Greenbelt, Maryland in April 2014 by her ex-boyfriend, Juan Miguel Roman-Balderas. Prosecutors say Roman-Balderas stabbed Ignacio 27 times at a Red Lobster restaurant and fled to Mexico on a pre-purchased one-way ticket, leaving behind the couple's 1-year-old son. For over a decade, Roman-Balderas evaded capture while building a new family in Mexico. DeJesus credited the Instagram account Crime Time Tea Time with helping publicize the case and leading to his eventual arrest. At Tuesday's sentencing in Upper Marlboro, the judge imposed the maximum sentence allowed under Roman-Balderas's guilty plea to first-degree murder, noting that he had tortured Ignacio. DeJesus delivered an emotional victim impact statement and expressed her intention to pursue a career in law or detective work.
