Jing Dong, 48, appeared in court Wednesday after being released from the hospital following a May 29 crash on Interstate 95 in Virginia that killed five people. He is charged with five counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of reckless driving, with the case split between two courts to expedite proceedings. The crash occurred in a work zone where Dong allegedly failed to slow down, resulting in a multi-vehicle collision that injured 44 people total.

Bus driver Jing Dong appeared for an arraignment hearing Wednesday in Stafford General District Court after his release from the hospital. He faces five counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of reckless driving stemming from the May 29 early morning crash on I-95 near exit 143 in Stafford, Virginia. The collision involved Dong's bus and six other vehicles, killing five people—including Priscilla Mafalda, 25, and the Doncev family (parents Dmitri and Ecaterina, ages 45 and 44, and their children Emily, 13, and Mark, 7)—all Massachusetts residents. Dong is accused of failing to slow down in a work zone; his attorney indicated the defense will compare Dong's account of events with evidence presented by prosecutors. Dong, a naturalized U.S. citizen from China and Staten Island resident, used a Mandarin interpreter in court and speaks limited English. He also faces a separate speeding charge in Anne Arundel County from March.
