Water Release into Kalingarayan Canal Delayed Due to Incomplete Renovation Works

1 source

The scheduled June 16 water release into the Kalingarayan Canal in Tamil Nadu has been delayed because renovation works are only 50% complete. The ₹83.33-crore modernisation project, which began in April 2026, is expected to finish by June 28. The delay threatens irrigation for 15,743 acres of farmland and could expose crops to monsoon-related risks.

Officials from the Water Resources Department announced that the Kalingarayan Canal's water release, scheduled for June 16, will likely be postponed due to incomplete modernisation works in Erode, Tamil Nadu. The 91.10-km canal, which irrigates approximately 15,743 acres and supports cultivation of turmeric, banana, sugarcane and other crops, had its water supply halted on April 7, 2026 to allow renovation work to proceed. The ₹83.33-crore project, sanctioned in July 2025, includes construction of protection walls, a baby canal, reconstruction of 67 sluices, bridges, an aqueduct, underpasses, and other infrastructure improvements. With only 50% of work completed as of June 10, officials estimate completion by June 28, pending farmer consultations. Local farmers have expressed concern that the delay could disrupt their planting schedules and expose crops to monsoon-related damage, with the Kalingarayan Farmers and Workers Welfare Association planning to meet and determine next steps.
