Turkey's UAV-Launched Ballistic Missile Enters Service

1 source

Turkey's Ministry of National Defense announced that the UAV-230, a ballistic missile designed for unmanned aerial vehicles, has entered service with the Turkish Land Forces Command. The air-to-surface missile has a range exceeding 150 kilometers and can be equipped with various warhead types for different target sets. The development reflects Turkey's broader strategy to achieve military autonomy and reduce dependence on foreign defense systems.

Turkey's Roketsan has successfully brought the UAV-230 missile into operational service, according to an announcement by the Ministry of National Defense. The 225-kilogram missile features a 150-kilometer range and is designed for launch from unmanned aerial vehicles, particularly Baykar's AKINCI and AKSUNGUR platforms. It uses GNSS-supported inertial guidance for precision targeting while protecting operators from the battlefield. The missile has undergone multiple successful test firings since December 2022, with ranges progressively extending to 155 kilometers by November 2024. The system offers flexible warhead options—fragmentation, armor-piercing, or thermobaric—for diverse target profiles including air defense systems, radar installations, and armored vehicles. This capability advancement aligns with Turkey's stated objective to meet nearly all military requirements domestically by 2030, following its exclusion from the U.S. F-35 program.
