Telangana SERP Expands Mahua-Based Livelihoods with New Oil Processing Units in Mulugu

The Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) in Telangana plans to establish three cold-pressed oil processing units in Mulugu district to expand value-added activities around Mahua and Kanuga forest produce. The expansion follows the success of a Mahua laddu initiative that has provided income to tribal women through FSSAI-licensed production. The project aims to convert traditional forest resources into sustainable livelihoods while capitalizing on strong market demand for Mahua oil, which sells for approximately ₹1,000 per kilogram.
The Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) is scaling up its Mahua-based livelihood initiative in Telangana's Mulugu district by establishing three new cold-pressed oil processing units at Kondaparti, Kannepally, and Medaram in SS Tadvai mandal. The units will extract oil from Mahua (Madhuca longifolia) and Kanuga (Pongamia pinnata) flowers while continuing laddu production, with an estimated cost of ₹15 lakh per unit. The expansion is driven by strong market demand, with Mahua oil commanding ₹1,000 per kilogram and being valued for its nutritional properties and use in Ayurvedic formulations. The initiative operates under the Telangana Inclusive Livelihoods Programme (TGILP), a component of the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), and has already demonstrated success through FSSAI licensing and training support for tribal women producers. A detailed project report is expected within a month, and a private cold-pressed unit is already operational at Pasra near Medaram, indicating market viability.
