South-East Queensland Launches $4 Million FOGO Trial to Boost Food Waste Recycling

1 source

South-east Queensland councils are trialling food-waste recycling programs across apartments, resorts, and townhouses with $4 million in state funding, targeting Brisbane, Gold Coast, Noosa, and Sunshine Coast areas. Queensland has lagged behind other Australian states in implementing permanent food organics and garden organics (FOGO) schemes despite a goal to reach 1.6 million homes by 2030. The trials aim to divert 530 tonnes of waste from landfill and test different processing methods including composting and biogas generation.

South-east Queensland councils are launching a coordinated trial of food-waste recycling programs backed by $4 million in state funding, focusing on multi-dwelling communities including retirement villages, resorts, and apartment complexes across Brisbane, Gold Coast, Noosa, and Sunshine Coast councils. The trials will employ different processing methods—Earthborn Organic Recycling and the Advanced Resource Recovery Centre will handle composting, while Urban Utilities will manage biogas conversion—with programs expected to run between one and 18 months. Queensland has historically underperformed in organic waste management compared to other Australian states; NSW has mandated full FOGO services by 2030 and has implemented such programs since 2000, while Melbourne councils operate four-bin systems including FOGO. Brisbane City Council paused its own FOGO trial in July 2024, instead rolling out garden-waste-only bins. The trials are expected to divert 530 tonnes of waste from landfill and represent a renewed effort to meet Queensland's goal of establishing schemes for 1.6 million homes by 2030.
