Politico Folds E&E News Brand, Expands Energy Coverage with New Newsletters

Politico is shutting down E&E News, the standalone energy publication it acquired in 2020, and consolidating it into its main brand while launching new energy-focused newsletters in September. The move reflects a broader reorganization that began in February when Politico integrated its energy and E&E staff, and comes as the company has grown its energy journalism team to over 90 reporters globally. The shift underscores how energy has become central to major stories including AI, geopolitics, and national security, prompting media outlets across the industry to expand their energy coverage.
Politico announced Monday that it will sunset E&E News, the energy-focused publication it purchased in December 2020, as part of a broader reorganization that actually expands rather than contracts its energy journalism. The company will launch two new energy-focused newsletters in September—Surge, tracking how AI-driven energy demand is reshaping North American and European politics and business, and State Power, covering state-level energy policymaking—while revamping existing newsletters including Morning Energy and Morning Environment. The reorganization has been underway for months, with Politico integrating its Energy and E&E staff in February. Politico now employs over 90 global energy journalists, up from 65 when it acquired E&E News. The move reflects a broader industry shift in how energy is covered: rather than being treated primarily as an environmental or climate issue, energy has become a central business and geopolitical story driven by data center demand from the AI boom. A Politico executive confirmed that Monday's announcement did not include staff cuts, though the company did lay off 3% of its workforce in January.
