Bijo Jose, owner of a jewellery shop in Pondy Bazaar, Chennai, was arrested in Idukki, Kerala on Tuesday after a three-year manhunt for defrauding multiple customers. The case originated in 2022 when Sabia, a resident of Egmore, visited the shop during its inauguration and was introduced to Jose. Needing funds for a house purchase, Sabia agreed to mortgage 250 sovereigns of her gold jewellery to Jose, who promised favorable interest rates. However, Jose never provided the promised loan amount and absconded with the jewellery in 2023. Sabia subsequently filed a complaint with the Central Crime Branch of the Greater Chennai Police, leading to a case registration with the Entrustment Document Fraud (EDF) wing. During the investigation, authorities discovered that Jose had employed the same fraudulent scheme against multiple other customers. Jose has been remanded to judicial custody following his arrest.
