India Completes Breakthrough on Zojila Tunnel, Its Longest Road Tunnel Near China Border

1 source

Indian engineers achieved a breakthrough on the Zojila tunnel through the Himalayas on Tuesday, connecting the final rock section of the 13.14-kilometre passage. The tunnel is part of a strategic infrastructure push to provide all-weather access to the Ladakh region bordering China, which has been seasonally cut off by heavy snowfall. The project underscores India's broader effort to strengthen connectivity and military logistics in a strategically sensitive frontier zone amid ongoing India-China rivalry.

India reached a major milestone in its Zojila tunnel project when engineers broke through the final rock section on Tuesday, creating what will be the country's longest road tunnel at 13.14 kilometres. The tunnel, which passes beneath the 3,528-metre Zojila Pass, will connect Srinagar in Kashmir with Leh in Ladakh, enabling year-round road travel that is currently blocked by heavy winter snowfall. More than 3,000 workers have been involved in the excavation since 2020, and the project is expected to be fully operational by 2028 as part of a broader four-tunnel network costing $712 million. The tunnel forms part of India's wider strategic infrastructure initiative in the region, which includes a $3.9-billion railway line opened by Prime Minister Modi in June 2025 and the Chenab Rail Bridge, currently the world's highest railway bridge. This infrastructure development reflects India's efforts to strengthen connectivity and military logistics capabilities in a frontier region bordering China, with whom India maintains a tense relationship following a 2020 border clash.
