Global Environment Facility Approves $3.9 Billion for Climate and Biodiversity Projects Through 2030

1 source

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) approved a $3.9 billion funding package at its assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to support climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, and water security across 144 countries from 2026 to 2030. The GEF is a multilateral fund established in 1991 that finances environmental projects and serves as a financial mechanism for major international agreements including the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The funding is critical as governments face mounting pressure to address climate-related environmental challenges including droughts, floods, and biodiversity loss.

Representatives from 186 countries met at the GEF Assembly to approve the initial $3.9 billion package for the fund's ninth replenishment cycle (GEF-9), which will run from 2026 to 2030. The funding will support projects across 144 recipient countries, with at least 35 percent directed toward least developed countries and small island developing states that face the greatest environmental risks. An additional 20 percent will support initiatives led by Indigenous peoples and local communities. The GEF-9 cycle introduces reforms aimed at reducing bureaucratic complexity and accelerating project implementation timelines. The new funding cycle emphasizes integrated programmes that link climate change, biodiversity, land degradation, food systems, and water management, reflecting recognition that environmental challenges are interconnected. The GEF currently manages $12.6 billion in active financing and is expected to mobilize an additional $80.5 billion through co-financing arrangements.
