Iranian Drone Strikes US Army Helicopter Near Strait of Hormuz; Intentionality Unclear
A US Army AH-64 Apache helicopter was struck by an Iranian Shahed drone and went down near the Strait of Hormuz on June 8, resulting in the loss of a $25 million aircraft. US military investigators are still determining whether the drone strike was deliberately targeted or an accidental hit, as Shahed drones have historically been used against stationary targets. The incident highlights the escalating military tensions in the region following the February 28, 2026 joint US-Israel attack on Iran.

Chris Richards declares himself fit for US World Cup opener against Paraguay
US defender Chris Richards, who suffered an ankle injury in May while playing for Crystal Palace, announced he is ready to play in Friday's World Cup opener against Paraguay. Richards had been a major concern for the USMNT after missing the 2022 World Cup with a hamstring injury, but returned to full training this week and says he is functionally ready despite some residual swelling. His availability is significant for the US defense, as he is considered the team's most important defender and a leader in the backline.
Trump's Shifting Timelines on Iran Conflict: From 'Four to Five Weeks' to Ongoing Operations
President Trump has repeatedly predicted the end of the U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran since they began on February 28, but the conflict has now lasted 15 weeks—three times longer than his initial four-to-five-week estimate. Trump has adjusted his language and timelines multiple times, at one point calling it an "excursion" rather than a war, and officials declared the "war phase" over in April despite ongoing intermittent attacks. The pattern of missed deadlines raises questions about the accuracy of official projections and the actual status of military operations.
