Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Plans Transfer Stations Across All Assembly Constituencies
The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has begun establishing transfer stations in all Assembly constituencies, with three already operational and four more nearing completion, aiming to operationalize all stations within a year. The initiative is funded through Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, civic corporations, and the 15th Finance Commission's NCAP allocation, with each station designed to handle 200-250 tonnes of waste daily. However, waste management experts question whether the proposed capacity will be sufficient given Bengaluru's current 5,200 garbage tippers and argue that additional micro-level planning is needed.
The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited has initiated a project to establish transfer stations across all Assembly constituencies in the city, with three stations already operational and four more under construction. According to BSWML CEO Karee Gowda, land has been identified at 23 locations, with construction set to commence at 15 sites and eight sites still awaiting land possession from original owners. The organization plans to operationalize all stations within approximately one year, with funding sourced from Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, civic corporations, and the 15th Finance Commission's NCAP allocation. Each transfer station will span 0.8 to 1.2 acres and is designed to handle 200-250 tonnes of waste daily. However, solid waste management expert V. Ramprasad has raised concerns that a single transfer station per Assembly constituency may be insufficient, given that Bengaluru currently operates 5,200 garbage tippers that make multiple collection rounds daily, and has advocated for additional micro-level planning and smaller centers to ensure system effectiveness.
