Washington Did Claim Tankers Were Carrying Iranian Oil — But the Full Picture Is More Complicated

The claim that Washington accused a tanker of attempting to transport Iranian oil is not fabricated — it reflects a pattern of real U.S. government actions. In 2023, the U.S. Navy and Department of Justice publicly confirmed multiple seizures of tankers they said were carrying Iranian crude oil in violation of American sanctions on Iran.

The clearest example is the April 2023 seizure of the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Advantage Sweet in the Gulf of Oman. The DOJ stated the vessel was carrying approximately 980,000 barrels of Iranian crude, making it one of the largest such seizures on record. Reuters and the BBC both independently reported on this and similar incidents, confirming that sanctions enforcement was Washington's stated justification.

That said, the story has a second side. Iran has disputed U.S. characterizations in several of these cases, according to the Associated Press. Tehran has consistently denied that seized oil belonged to Iran or that the ships were acting on its behalf. Those counterclaims have not been independently verified, but they matter — U.S. assertions, even when backed by legal filings, are not automatically the final word.

The broader verdict here is "unverifiable" in one specific sense: without knowing exactly which tanker or incident the original claim points to, it is impossible to confirm or deny it precisely. The U.S. has made this type of accusation many times, and some cases are better documented than others.
