Partly True: Ukrainian Drones Hit Russian Refineries on June 12 — But the Tolyattikauchuk Claim Doesn't Hold Up

A claim circulating online stated that Ukrainian drone strikes on June 12, 2024 simultaneously hit three major Russian industrial targets: the Nizhnekamskneftekhim petrochemical complex, the Taneco oil refinery, and the Tolyattikauchuk synthetic rubber facility. Two of those three are confirmed. The third is not, making the claim partially false.

Reuters, the Kyiv Independent, and BBC News all confirmed that drones struck Nizhnekamskneftekhim and Taneco in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan on June 12. The BBC noted these were among the deepest strikes of the war, reaching over 1,200 kilometers into Russian territory — a genuinely significant military development.

The Tolyattikauchuk facility is a different story. It sits in Togliatti, in Samara Oblast — a separate region from the confirmed Tatarstan strikes. The Institute for the Study of War flagged in its June 12 assessment that claims about Tolyattikauchuk required additional verification and may have involved a different date or attack wave. No major outlet independently confirmed it as part of the same operation.

RBC Ukraine noted that some Ukrainian media reports appeared to merge multiple drone operations into a single June 12 narrative. That kind of compression is how partial truths become misleading ones — the confirmed strikes were real and significant, but adding an unverified third target inflates the claim beyond what the evidence supports.

This matters because accuracy about military events is important even when the underlying story is genuinely dramatic. Bundling unconfirmed targets with confirmed ones makes it harder to assess what actually happened — and gives critics easy grounds to dismiss the whole story.
