Claim That No Republican Wins in Nassau County, New York Is False

The claim holds that Republicans simply do not win in Nassau County, New York. The verdict is false — and not marginally so. The evidence shows a county where Republicans have dominated local government for most of the post-World War II era and continued winning elections as recently as 2023.

The most direct refutation comes from the Nassau County Board of Elections: in November 2021, Republican Bruce Blakeman defeated sitting Democratic County Executive Laura Curran, 52% to 48%. That is an incumbent losing to a Republican challenger in a cycle when Democrats nationally were hoping suburban gains would hold. One year later, the New York State Board of Elections recorded Republican Anthony D'Esposito winning NY-4, which covers much of Nassau County, by approximately 54% — flipping a Democratic-held U.S. House seat. In the same November 2022 election, Republican George Santos won the adjacent NY-3, which includes parts of Nassau County, also with roughly 54% of the vote. At the legislative level, Republicans held 11 of 19 seats on the Nassau County Legislature after the 2023 elections, according to the Nassau County Board of Elections — a working majority, not a fluke.

The steelman version of this claim points to real Democratic inroads: Laura Curran did win the County Executive race in 2017, and Democrats have periodically made the county competitive. That is worth conceding. Nassau is not a one-party lockout; it is genuinely contested terrain. But "competitive" and "no Republican wins" are entirely different statements, and the evidence collapses the latter completely.

The historical record makes the claim even harder to sustain. Newsday reported in 2021 that Nassau County has been one of the most reliably Republican suburban counties in New York State, with the GOP controlling the County Executive office for the majority of the post-WWII era. The Nassau County Board of Elections results show Republican County Executive candidates winning in 2009 (Ed Mangano, 51.4%) and 2013 (Mangano again, 50.8%) before Curran's 2017 win, and then Blakeman's 2021 victory at 52.1%. The pattern is consistent: Republicans compete hard and win more often than they lose at the county level.

The manipulation pattern here is geographic conflation. New York City votes overwhelmingly Democratic — sometimes 80% or more for Democratic candidates — and that reality gets stretched into a claim about the entire state or its suburbs. Nassau County sits just east of Queens on Long Island, but its political character is entirely distinct from the five boroughs. Anyone repeating this claim is either confusing Nassau with New York City or cherry-picking the one cycle (2017) where Democrats won the top county office while ignoring every surrounding data point.
