Ridgway told Newsweek the experience was 'hell,' describing severe backlash including death threats, while also noting significant support from women who said his openness helped them feel less alone. He said the decision came after weeks of research and was not made lightly, and that he has since become '100 percent pro-choice.' The controversy has drawn attention to broader statistics: an estimated 67 percent of pregnancies diagnosed with Down syndrome in the U.S. are terminated, according to a major scientific review, and approximately 1.1 million abortions were provided by U.S. clinicians in 2023 according to the Guttmacher Institute. The New York Post additionally reported that Ridgway had posted a 2017 video in which he mocked Down syndrome using stereotypical mannerisms, a detail that intensified criticism of him.
