Woman in Critical Condition After Shark Attack at Sydney's Coogee Beach
A woman in her 30s was bitten by a shark at Coogee Beach in Sydney's east on Saturday morning, leaving her in a critical condition with serious arm and leg injuries. Members of the public pulled her from the water and commenced first aid before emergency services arrived, with a CareFlight helicopter dispatched to airlift her to hospital. The attack prompted the closure of Coogee and neighbouring beaches including Clovelly and Bronte.
The shark attack occurred just after 11:00am on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Coogee Beach, a popular Sydney swimming spot. Members of the public pulled the woman from the water and began first aid before NSW Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived on scene. The woman sustained serious injuries to both her arms and legs and was described by NSW Ambulance as being in a critical condition. A CareFlight helicopter landed at the nearby Coogee Oval, cleared by police, to prepare for her airlift to hospital once her condition was stable enough for transport. Emergency responders and a rescue jet ski were deployed to the beach, and images from the scene showed large crowds of onlookers gathered along the promenade with the water completely cleared of swimmers. Coogee Beach, along with Clovelly and Bronte, were closed following the incident, and surf lifesavers at Tamarama to the north also cleared the water as a precaution. An ABC journalist who was present described hearing a "chilling scream" followed immediately by the shark alarm.
What's missing
The species of shark involved has not been identified in any of the sources. It is also unclear at time of reporting whether the woman had been successfully airlifted to hospital or what her prognosis was.
