Veteran Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja dies at 84

Bharathiraja, one of the most influential directors in the history of Tamil cinema, died on June 10, 2026, in Chennai at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness that had included hospitalisation for breathing-related complications in late 2025. His 1977 debut film, 16 Vayathinile — starring Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Rajinikanth — is regarded as a landmark that shifted Tamil filmmaking away from studio-bound productions toward authentic rural locations, fundamentally altering the industry's visual language and storytelling norms. Over a career of more than 40 films, he explored themes of caste, gender inequality, interfaith relationships, and rural social dynamics, with acclaimed works including Sigappu Rojakkal, Muthal Mariyathai, Mann Vasanai, Karuththamma, and Kizhakku Cheemaiyile. He was instrumental in launching the careers of numerous actors — among them Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in early prominent roles, as well as Radikaa, Revathi, Radha, Karthik, and Rekha — and collaborated extensively with composer Ilaiyaraaja in one of Tamil cinema's most celebrated director-composer partnerships. His final rites were conducted with full state honours at his Theni farmhouse, attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and actor Rajinikanth, among many others, while tributes poured in from figures including Chiranjeevi, M.K. Stalin, and Suriya. He is survived by his wife Chandraleela, whom he married in 1974, and daughter Janani; his son, actor-director Manoj Bharathiraja, predeceased him in March 2025 at the age of 48.
