UFC Fight at White House for Trump's 80th Birthday Draws Sponsorships and Legal Challenges

The UFC Freedom 250 event on the White House South Lawn marks the first professional mixed martial arts competition ever held on the grounds of the executive mansion, timed to President Trump's 80th birthday and the lead-up to the U.S. semiquincentennial. A temporary arena dubbed 'The Claw' — 47 meters wide and 92 feet tall, surpassing the height of the White House — was constructed on the South Lawn, with seating for approximately 4,000 spectators, more than half of whom Dana White said would be U.S. military members, and an overflow viewing area on the Ellipse for up to 125,000 more. TKO Group Holdings, which owns the UFC, is bearing the over $60 million cost, and White pledged an additional $700,000 to restore the White House lawn. The event is being streamed on Paramount+, whose parent company Skydance is controlled by Trump ally David Ellison, who recently received Justice Department approval for his purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery. Sponsors include Bud Light — whose brand is visibly displayed on the Octagon cage despite the beer having been boycotted by MAGA supporters in 2023 over a transgender influencer partnership — as well as Polymarket, a prediction market in which Trump's son is an advisor and investor. A federal lawsuit filed by the Public Integrity Project alleged the event constitutes an improper use of public property to benefit the president's allies, but a federal judge declined to block it on Friday. Critics and analysts have also noted the decades-long transactional relationship between Trump and Dana White, with White having endorsed Trump at three consecutive Republican National Conventions and having helped rehabilitate Trump's public image after January 6.
