Two separate murder cases conclude with lengthy prison sentences in different jurisdictions

In Haifa District Court, 32-year-old Halal Khlo of Acre accepted a plea deal and was convicted of intentional murder after a six-year trial stemming from a January 2020 drive-by shooting in Nahariya. Khlo and others had targeted a man named Muhammad Rubai, but a stray bullet struck and killed a 17-year-old bystander who happened to be nearby. The prosecution acknowledged evidentiary difficulties in establishing exactly who fired the fatal shot, leading to the plea arrangement. Separately, a Western Australia Supreme Court sentenced James Hunt to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years for the murder of Raymond Smith, who was killed during a robbery at his Greenbushes home in December 2023. Co-offender Paul May received 17 years for manslaughter, while a third man, Kevin Potter, had previously been sentenced to life with a minimum of 15 years after pleading guilty to murder. Justice Amanda Forrester described Hunt's violence as particularly gratuitous, noting he had dragged, bound, and stomped on the victim. Smith's daughter told the court her father's greatest fear had been dying alone, and that fear was ultimately realized.
