Toy Story 5 Director Reveals Jessie's Leading Role Emerged Organically During Development

Director Andrew Stanton revealed in an exclusive interview that he did not intentionally plan for Jessie to replace Woody and Buzz as the lead character of Toy Story 5. When approached in 2022 about directing the film, Stanton was told no story concept existed, so he began developing ideas independently. He knew he wanted to address Jessie's past—a decades-long mystery since her abandonment was revealed in Toy Story 2—and combine that with themes about device addiction and childhood loneliness in the digital age. As Stanton and co-writer Kenna Harris brainstormed, including concepts like multiple Buzz Lightyears connected through technology, Jessie naturally emerged as the film's focal point.
