Toronto Police Drug Squad Officer Sentenced to 4 Years for Stealing and Possessing Seized Drugs

Former Toronto police officer Brian Sukhram was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing cocaine and methamphetamine, breach of trust, and obstructing justice. Sukhram stole drugs and cash from evidence seized during a drug investigation in July 2024, which he was processing as part of his duties. The case highlights corruption within law enforcement and the mishandling of seized narcotics.
Brian Sukhram, a 39-year-old Toronto Police Service drug squad officer with 13 years of service, was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges including possession of cocaine and methamphetamine, breach of trust, and obstructing justice. According to an agreed statement of facts, on July 3, 2024, Sukhram took a backpack containing 83.65 grams of methamphetamine, 147 grams of crack cocaine, and erectile dysfunction pills from evidence seized during a drug investigation—drugs he had been processing as part of his official duties. After leaving the police parking lot, Sukhram was involved in a hit-and-run collision and subsequent driving offences in Peel Region, where he was arrested with the drugs still in his possession. Investigation revealed that batch ID numbers on some items matched those from the original search warrant, and the evidence bag in his backpack was sequentially numbered with bags in his office desk, establishing the theft. Sukhram expressed remorse in court and his defence noted his prior service record, but the court accepted the joint Crown-defence position for the four-year sentence.
