On May 29, Selvan approached five visiting devotees from Andhra Pradesh and promised them special darshan (temple viewing) without queue waiting in exchange for additional payment to temple authorities. He collected ₹5,000 from the group but provided only an ordinary ticket worth ₹50. When the devotees discovered the deception inside the temple premises, they attempted to apprehend Selvan, but he fled the scene. Following a complaint from temple authorities, police registered a case, reviewed CCTV footage to identify the suspect, and arrested him from his hideout in the town. He was subsequently lodged in the town sub-jail pending investigation.
