Study of Isolated Active Galactic Nuclei Reveals X-ray Properties Unaffected by Galaxy Isolation

Researchers analyzed X-ray data from 32 isolated active galactic nuclei (AGNs) — galaxies that have had no significant interactions with comparable neighbors for at least ~3 billion years — and found that this isolation does not meaningfully change the nature of their nuclear activity. The study, using data from five major X-ray observatories, determined spectral models for 20 isolated AGNs and derived supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses for 24 of the 32 sources. Notably, the work uncovered a previously unreported linear correlation between 2–10 keV X-ray luminosity and SMBH mass in this isolated sample, a trend not seen in other AGN populations.

A new preprint on arXiv presents the second installment of the 2MIG isolated AGN study, systematically examining X-ray properties of 32 isolated active galactic nuclei at redshift z < 0.05 using archival data from Swift, NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, Chandra, and INTEGRAL. The isolation criterion — ruling out interactions with similarly evolved galaxies for at least ~3 Gyr — was designed to test whether a pristine environment alters AGN behavior. The authors found no significant difference in nuclear activity attributable to isolation, evidenced by a diversity of accretion types and the absence of any preferred spectral model. SMBH masses were derived for 24 of 32 sources via the M_BH–stellar velocity dispersion relation, with 27 of 32 hosting SMBHs below 10^8 solar masses. A particularly intriguing finding is a tentative linear correlation between hard X-ray luminosity (2–10 keV) and log SMBH mass, not previously observed in other AGN samples, though the authors caution this may reflect the limited sample size. One source, ESO 499-041, showed notable spectral deviations above 5 keV that may indicate a relativistic iron emission line, warranting follow-up observations. The study provides spectral fits for 9 sources analyzed for the first time.

The study's own key limitations include a small sample size (32 sources), which the authors explicitly acknowledge may drive the novel L_X–M_SMBH correlation and requires confirmation with larger datasets. The comparison to AGNs in denser environments relies on literature samples rather than a matched control group observed with the same instruments and methods, which could introduce systematic differences. The tentative relativistic iron line in ESO 499-041 is based on a single instrument (Chandra) and has not been confirmed with dedicated follow-up observations.
