A speedrunning YouTuber known as SHiFT recently posted a video detailing how to smudge specific points on a SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom game disc to achieve faster completion times. The technique works by creating strategic smudges on the disc's readable surface, which causes the Xbox disc reader's laser to lose focus and induces lag clipping—a state where repeated pausing allows players to exploit glitches and advance through the game more quickly than normal gameplay permits. SHiFT's video garnered over 35,000 views within five days, reflecting ongoing interest in speedrunning the 18-year-old title. However, SHiFT explicitly warns that the method is unreliable and risky, as even minor scratches can permanently destroy the disc or console hardware. He emphasizes that this approach contradicts a core value of speedrunning communities: preserving classic games rather than destroying them.
