When Santhammal went to store unsold fruits in a godown before visiting her daughter, Ramu followed her with intent to rob her of gold ornaments and cash. When she raised an alarm, he stabbed her on the neck, killing her on the spot. Police investigation involved analyzing CCTV footage along the route and tracking mobile phone signals, which placed Ramu at the scene. Ramu confessed to the crime during questioning and was lodged in Tirupattur sub-jail pending further investigation.
