Denis Obrezko, a 36-year-old suspected Russian hacker, was extradited from Thailand and made his initial court appearance in Boston on Tuesday, facing charges for facilitating cyberattacks by the group Void Blizzard. Void Blizzard, identified by Microsoft in May 2025, has targeted government, defense, and other critical sectors in NATO member states and Ukraine since at least April 2024. The case represents a significant law enforcement action against Russian-aligned cyber espionage operations targeting US and allied organizations.

Denis Obrezko was arrested in Thailand in November and extradited to the United States, where he appeared in federal court in Boston on Tuesday. The 36-year-old faces charges of conspiring to commit unauthorized access to protected computers in connection with Void Blizzard, a Russia-aligned hacker group. According to court documents, the FBI has identified at least 11 US companies that were compromised, though this is believed to represent only a fraction of the group's total victims. Void Blizzard, first identified by Microsoft in a May 2025 report, has been active since at least April 2024 and primarily targets government, defense, transportation, media, healthcare, and non-governmental organizations in NATO member states and Ukraine. The FBI's affidavit details the group's focus on mass email harvesting across US business sectors, and links Obrezko to cryptocurrency transactions used to acquire infrastructure for conducting attacks. Obrezko is being held without bond, and the case is being prosecuted by the US Department of Justice's National Security Division.
