Researchers Propose Five-Stage Framework for AI Literacy Development in Universities

1 source

Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a five-stage continuum for teaching AI literacy to university students, moving from non-engagement through uncritical use to critical evaluation and improvement. The framework addresses a gap in existing AI education approaches, which often leave students either avoiding AI tools entirely or using them without understanding their limitations. The model aims to help educators guide students toward responsible, informed AI use as a foundational competency for graduates.

A new study published on arXiv proposes a practical developmental framework for AI literacy in higher education, consisting of five stages: Not Yet Engaged, Uncritical Use, Informed Use, Critical Evaluation, and Improvement. The research, conducted at North Carolina State University, involved over 330 participants in credit-bearing courses and workshops between Fall 2024 and Spring 2026. Rather than focusing solely on tool adoption, the framework emphasizes developing students' capacity to understand, evaluate, and responsibly apply AI systems within disciplinary contexts. The researchers found that participants showed behavioral evidence of progression from non-engagement or uncritical use toward informed engagement, with sustained, discipline-embedded experiences producing stronger evidence of critical evaluation. The framework aligns with international standards from UNESCO and OECD, and the authors argue it provides educators with practical diagnostic tools and instructional pathways for advancing AI literacy.

What's missing

The study acknowledges it did not employ a validated pre/post assessment instrument or comparison group, framing findings as observational and practice-based rather than experimental. The long-term retention of learning outcomes and transferability of the framework to different institutional contexts, disciplines, and student populations remain open questions.

Consumer Watchdog Warns of Dangerous Counterfeit Phone Chargers Sold on Major Retailers

British consumer group Which? tested 15 third-party phone chargers and found that 9 posed electric shock risks and 8 presented fire or explosion hazards, with many sold through Amazon, eBay, B&Q, and other major retailers. The findings come seven years after Which? first warned about dangerous chargers, indicating the problem persists despite previous alerts. The issue matters because defective chargers can cause electrical arcing leading to electrocution, fires, and explosions, prompting calls for stricter government regulation of online marketplaces.
