Research Reveals Nocturnal and Territorial Behavior of Adult Whitebait Species

1 source

A University of Canterbury researcher has conducted new studies on kōkopu, adult whitebait species that can live for over a decade, revealing they are nocturnal, territorial, and competitive. Whitebait refers to juveniles of six freshwater fish species, with kōkopu species having received significantly less research attention than īnanga, which dominate commercial catches. This research helps fill knowledge gaps about lesser-studied whitebait species and their adult life cycles.

Dr. Ben Crichton from the University of Canterbury's School of Biological Sciences has published new research on kōkopu, a group of whitebait species that can survive for 10 years or longer in their adult form. The study reveals that these fish exhibit nocturnal, territorial, and competitive behaviors during their adult lives. Whitebait is a collective term for the juvenile stage of six freshwater fish species found in New Zealand. While īnanga whitebait have been extensively studied and comprise the majority of commercial whitebait catches, the three kōkopu species have historically received less research attention. This new research addresses a significant gap in scientific understanding of these lesser-known whitebait species and their behavioral ecology.

Computational Study Identifies Plant-Derived Peptide as Potential MDM2-p53 Inhibitor

Researchers used computational screening of plant proteomes to identify SPAFESTWDILK, a 12-amino-acid peptide from ginger, as a predicted binder to MDM2—a protein that regulates the tumor suppressor p53. The discovery employed multiple computational methods including AlphaFold 3 co-folding and molecular dynamics simulations, with results showing consistent binding predictions across eight different assessments. The finding is significant because no food-derived linear peptide has previously been documented to engage the MDM2-p53 interface, though the authors acknowledge that experimental validation is needed.

Active Learning Framework Guides Design of Peptides to Modulate Biomolecular Condensate Properties

Researchers used active learning combined with molecular dynamics simulations to design peptide variants that can tune the physical properties of biomolecular condensates, specifically studying the MUT-16 condensate in C. elegans. The approach integrates Bayesian optimization with neural networks to efficiently identify peptide sequences that modulate condensate behavior while reducing computational requirements. This work could enable rational engineering of synthetic condensates and inform therapeutic strategies for diseases linked to condensate dysfunction, including neurodegenerative disorders.

Researchers Develop 'Molecular Eraser' to Destroy Cancer-Causing mRNA Before Protein Forms

Scientists at the Max Planck Institute have created a new therapeutic approach that targets and destroys mRNA of the NRAS cancer protein before it can be translated into protein. RAS mutations are responsible for many of the deadliest cancers, but effective treatments have remained elusive. This mRNA-targeting strategy could represent a new avenue for treating previously difficult-to-address cancers.
