REM Sleep Theta Oscillations May Help Process Emotional Memories, Study Suggests

A study posted to bioRxiv describes an automated protocol in which participants who had undergone fear conditioning were re-exposed to conditioned stimuli via acoustic cues timed to either the upswing or downswing of theta oscillations during REM sleep. Both timing conditions enhanced the theta dynamic, and theta phase-locked memory reactivation significantly reduced the emotional tone of the conditioned memories compared to a sham condition in which no acoustic cue was delivered. Critically, this emotional attenuation occurred without impairing recognition memory performance or altering dream qualities, suggesting a selective effect on emotional valence rather than memory content broadly. The researchers describe this as the first causal evidence that REM sleep theta oscillations are involved in dampening the emotional charge of memories, moving beyond prior correlational findings. The authors suggest the results advance understanding of emotional memory consolidation during sleep and may point toward novel therapeutic approaches for disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder that are characterized by persistently maladaptive emotional memories.
