Puducherry Expands Electric Bus Fleet Under PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme with New Charging Infrastructure
Puducherry has begun deploying electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme, with 15 buses already in commercial operation and plans for 75 total buses in the city. The government is establishing a new permanent depot and charging facility to support the expanded fleet, operating under a public-private model with GreenCell Mobility as the private operator. This initiative is part of a nationwide effort to deploy 10,000 electric buses and promote sustainable urban mobility.
The Puducherry government has launched electric bus operations across urban routes as part of the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme and Smart Cities Mission. Currently, 25 buses operate under the Smart Cities Mission while 15 buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme have commenced commercial operations, with 15 additional buses inaugurated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit. The government plans to deploy a total of 75 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme through GreenCell Mobility Private Limited, operating under a Gross Cost Contract model. A new permanent depot and charging facility is being constructed to support all 75 vehicles, complementing the existing facility at Maraimalai Adigal Salai. The buses include both 9-metre and 12-metre AC variants equipped with modern amenities such as wheelchair lifts. Under the operating model, GreenCell Mobility handles drivers and maintenance while the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation manages conductors and pays operators on a per-kilometre basis.
