Newborn boy sold for ₹1.7 lakh rescued; authorities register case

A 12-day-old newborn boy with a physical disability was illegally sold for ₹1.7 lakh through intermediaries to a childless couple in India, leading authorities to rescue the infant and register a criminal case. The Women and Child Welfare Department discovered the illegal transaction, which bypassed formal adoption procedures and involved payment to a relative of the biological father. The case highlights vulnerabilities in child protection systems and the exploitation of families seeking adoption.
A newborn boy born on May 28 at a private hospital in Tukkuguda was illegally transferred to a childless couple for ₹1.7 lakh through two intermediaries, Potharaju Suresh and Padma Paltiya. The biological parents, Mohan and Sandhya, handed over their infant son—who has a physical disability—to Padma, a relative of the father. The couple seeking adoption, Madhusudhan and Meena, who had been childless for 18 years, approached Suresh for assistance, leading to the illegal transaction at JP Dargah in Kothur mandal. The Women and Child Welfare Department received information about the transfer, conducted an enquiry, and lodged a complaint at Kulsumpura police station on June 9. Following investigation, the 12-day-old infant was placed under state care at Shishu Vihar in Ameerpet, and a Zero FIR was registered and transferred to Nandigama police for further investigation.
What's missing
The specific charges filed against the intermediaries and biological parents; whether the adoptive couple faces criminal liability; the legal framework governing adoption in the jurisdiction and penalties for violations; follow-up on the investigation status.
