Kerala Government Announces Comprehensive Prison System Reforms

Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala outlined an extensive prison reform agenda following a high-level meeting with senior Prisons department officials on June 9, 2026. Key proposals include addressing prison overcrowding through construction of an additional central prison, increasing prison staff for better management, and strengthening prison-run production units and vocational programs. The government plans to revise both the Prison Manual and Prison Rules. Chennithala emphasized that while the government would protect inmates' legitimate rights, prisoners would not receive parole on political grounds, though deserving inmates would not be denied legally entitled benefits. The minister also addressed an ongoing inquiry into prisoner escapes during the previous administration, noting that the investigating committee's term had been extended by three months.
