Karnataka PWD Completes First Carriageway of Kankanady Bypass Road Concreting Project in Mangaluru

The Public Works Department of Karnataka has completed concreting one of two carriageways on the 750-metre Kankanady Bypass Road in Mangaluru, a key city entry point. The project, sanctioned in 2020 at ₹4 crore, faced delays due to prolonged utility line shifting by the Mangaluru City Corporation. Work on the second carriageway will begin after remaining utility lines are relocated, with traffic diversions continuing until both sides are completed.
The Karnataka Public Works Department has finished concreting the up-carriageway (towards the city) of Kankanady Bypass Road between Karavali Junction and Pumpwell Circle, converting it from asphalt to concrete. The work began on February 20, 2026, but the project experienced delays beyond the original four-month timeline due to the time-consuming process of shifting underground drainage lines by the Mangaluru City Corporation. The down-carriageway (exit) concreting will commence once the MCC completes shifting of additional utility lines, which the corporation had initially claimed did not exist. Traffic management measures remain in place, with outgoing traffic using the newly-concreted stretch and incoming traffic routed via Kankanady Old Road. The complete project scope includes laying 7-metre-wide concrete roads on both sides with a 1-metre median, and was originally sanctioned in 2020 despite the five-year implementation delay.
