India's first made-in-India C295 military transport aircraft successfully completed its maiden test flight at the final assembly line in Vadodara, Gujarat, marking a major milestone for the country's aerospace and defence sector. The aircraft is the first of 40 C295s being manufactured by Tata Advanced Systems Limited in partnership with Airbus under India's 'Make in India' initiative. India had signed a Rs 21,935 crore contract with Spain in September 2021 for 56 C295 aircraft total, with 16 being supplied directly from Spain and 40 to be manufactured domestically. The C295 is designed to replace India's aging transport aircraft fleet and can carry up to 70 troops, 48 paratroopers, or 24 medical stretchers, with capabilities suited for operations in mountainous regions and remote forward bases. The Vadodara manufacturing facility was inaugurated in October 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish counterpart Pedro Sánchez. The Indian Air Force has emphasized that this achievement reinforces India's growing aerospace capabilities and commitment to fostering indigenous defence capability.
