The Research Science Initiative – Chennai (RSIC) 2026, a six-week residential programme organized by PSBB Group of Schools in collaboration with IIT-Madras, concluded on June 3 with 37 students from 25 schools participating. The programme provided students with advanced lectures, independent research projects under scientist mentorship, and visits to institutions including SASTRA University and the Chennai Mathematical Institute. The initiative aims to provide first-hand exposure to scientific research and interdisciplinary learning across fields including AI, ecology, and the arts.

The 2026 edition of the Research Science Initiative – Chennai (RSIC) ran from April 24 to June 3 as a six-week residential programme hosted at IIT-Madras. The initiative brought together 37 students from 25 schools across the region and was organized by the PSBB Group of Schools in collaboration with IIT-Madras and other institutions. Participants attended advanced lectures and conducted independent research projects under the guidance of scientists and academicians. The programme included field visits to SASTRA University, the Chennai Mathematical Institute, and the Saint-Gobain Glass Factory for practical learning experiences. An evening lecture series featured experts from diverse fields including architecture, artificial intelligence, ecology, music, dance, theatre, and traditional art forms. The valedictory ceremony recognized the contributions of programme coordinators and featured remarks from notable figures including S. Sadagopan, founder president and Director of IIT-Bangalore.

Photometric Analysis of Two SU UMa-Type Dwarf Novae Reveals Superhump Characteristics and Orbital Parameters

Astronomers conducted new photometric observations of two dwarf novae systems, RZ LMi and KV Dra, detecting superhumps during superoutbursts and measuring their periods and amplitudes. The study refined the classification of RZ LMi as an ER UMa subclass dwarf nova and KV Dra as a WZ Sge subclass system, while determining an orbital period of 0.0586 days for KV Dra. These measurements contribute to understanding the physical properties and behavior of these binary star systems.

New Virial-Based Method for Extracting Star-Forming Cores from Simulations

Researchers have developed a new tool called vibes that uses the virial theorem to identify and extract star-forming cores from 3D numerical simulations, addressing limitations of existing density-based methods. The method builds structures iteratively around density peaks and defines core boundaries based on energy evolution rather than user-defined density thresholds. This approach could improve understanding of how stellar initial mass functions form by providing more physically meaningful and stable core extraction.

Researchers Detect Candidate Cyclotron Line in Hyperluminous X-ray Source NGC 3583 X-1

Astronomers analyzing archival X-ray data from the transient hyperluminous X-ray source 2SXPS J111416.1+481833 in galaxy NGC 3583 detected a statistically significant absorption line at approximately 2 keV, which they interpret as a candidate cyclotron resonance scattering feature. This feature suggests the presence of a highly magnetized neutron star with a magnetic field strength around 4×10¹⁴ Gauss. The discovery is significant because it provides evidence for extreme magnetic fields in neutron stars and helps constrain the nature of hyperluminous X-ray sources.
