IEEE Awards Recognize Outstanding Student and Faculty Leaders in Community Engineering Projects

IEEE has announced the Excellent EPICS in IEEE Contributor Awards, honoring students and faculty who have advanced the Engineering Projects in Community Service program through exceptional leadership and mentorship. The awards recognize individuals whose work has meaningfully improved both student experiences and outcomes for community partners. The recognition highlights how engineering education can address real-world challenges, such as sustainable water management in agriculture.
The IEEE Educational Activities division has launched the Excellent EPICS in IEEE Contributor Awards to recognize outstanding contributors to the EPICS program, which connects engineering students with community service projects. Recipients are selected based on demonstrated leadership, mentorship, project management, and measurable impact on both student development and community outcomes. Among this year's honorees is Surattana Kakay, a computer engineering student at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi in Thailand, who led the development of an IoT-based Automatic Water Level Control System for rice farmers. Under Kakay's leadership, the team created a low-cost system that reduces water consumption by 63 percent and methane emissions by 7 percent annually, while also establishing a mentorship framework for future student cohorts. The awards underscore the program's emphasis on combining technical innovation with practical community needs and professional development.
