Human-in-the-Loop Approach Outperforms Automated Chain-of-Thought for Interview Answer Improvement

Both approaches produced measurable improvements in answer quality, but HITL coaching showed substantially stronger gains: candidate confidence scores rose from 3.16 to 4.16 and authenticity scores from 2.94 to 4.53 (Cohen's d = 3.21), both statistically significant at p < 0.001. The HITL method also converged in a single iteration on average, compared to five iterations for the automated approach, and achieved full integration of personal details that automated methods struggled to incorporate. Among initially weak answers, HITL reached a 100% success rate versus 84% for automated CoT, a large effect size difference (Cohen's h = 0.82). The study also introduced an 'adversarial bar raiser' mechanism designed to simulate realistic interviewer pressure using a negativity bias model, though this component awaits quantitative validation. The authors conclude that additional automated iterations yield diminishing returns, pointing to context scarcity—not compute—as the core limitation. Domain-specific enhancements and context-aware method selection are recommended for pedagogically effective interview training systems.
