Historian Gordon S. Wood Dies at 92 After Being Struck by Vehicle

Gordon S. Wood, one of America's most celebrated historians of the American Revolution and Founding period, died at 92 after sustaining critical injuries when struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of a Shaw's supermarket on Taunton Avenue in East Providence, Rhode Island. According to the East Providence Police Department, he was taken to a hospital where he later died. Wood had a prolific career spanning more than five decades, beginning with his 1969 doctoral dissertation-based book "The Creation of the American Republic, 1776–1787," which won the Bancroft Prize. His 1993 work "The Radicalism of the American Revolution" won the Pulitzer Prize for History, and "Empire of Liberty" was a Pulitzer finalist in 2010. His death came weeks before the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and he had recently appeared in Ken Burns's PBS documentary "The American Revolution." Fellow historians and public figures, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, paid tribute to his influence on their understanding of American history.
