NHAI officials attributed the price surge to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has increased costs of bitumen—a petroleum byproduct—substantially. While awaiting price stabilization, motorists are forced to use a six-meter-wide service lane designed for temporary traffic, creating congestion and safety concerns. The service lane suffers from potholes, inadequate lighting, poor signage, and waterlogging from nearby quarries, posing risks to vehicles, pedestrians, and emergency services like ambulances and buses. Remaining work includes retaining wall strengthening, final bitumen layer application, and streetlight installation. The Ranipet Collector has directed police to request NHAI expedite the bridge opening to restore normal traffic flow and safety.
