HBO's 'Rome,' a BBC co-production that aired in the early 2000s, was an ambitious historical drama depicting the downfall of Julius Caesar and subsequent political turmoil in ancient Rome. The show cost $100 million and spent seven years in development before airing its first season of 12 episodes. Despite industry expectations that it would replicate 'The Sopranos'' success, HBO's then-CEO Chris Albrecht clarified that the network's priority was maintaining double-digit profit margins rather than matching any single show's performance. The series received widespread critical praise and multiple Emmy Awards, particularly for costume design—costume designer April Ferry's team created over 4,000 custom-dyed costumes using natural materials, outfitted 250 soldiers in 36-pound chain-mail tunics, and dressed over 100 extras for major scenes.
