French Singer Patrick Bruel Held in Police Custody Over Multiple Sexual Assault Allegations

Patrick Bruel, one of France's most celebrated pop stars and actors, was formally placed under judicial investigation on June 11 following two days in police custody at the Nanterre courthouse in the western suburbs of Paris. The charges concern allegations of rape in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 2008, attempted rape in Brussels in 2010, and sexual assault and sexual harassment in Perpignan and Ajaccio in 2019, with additional allegations of rape, attempted rape, and harassment between 2010 and 2019 in other locations also under investigation. Prosecutors had requested pre-trial detention, but the panel of four investigating judges released Bruel on €500,000 bail under judicial supervision, barring him from leaving France, contacting alleged victims, and entering massage parlors. A separate strand of the case involves 13 additional women whose allegations, dating as far back as 1992, may be barred by statutes of limitations, though judges will examine whether procedural steps may have interrupted the clock. The case was significantly accelerated by an investigative report from French outlet Mediapart, which brought forward accounts from around 30 women, and was later joined by TV presenter Flavie Flament, who alleged Bruel drugged and raped her in 1991 when she was 16. Bruel has consistently denied all allegations, with his lawyers stating he will cooperate fully with the investigation. The case comes amid heightened public sensitivity in France about the judicial handling of sexual offenses and follows the conviction of actor Gérard Depardieu, who received a suspended 18-month sentence for sexual assault.
