Father grieves daughter's murder in Winnipeg; advocates say insufficient progress on Indigenous violence prevention

Avontai Hartleib, 18, was found dead in a Winnipeg home on Valentine's Day, and a 14-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder. In 2017, the federal government released 231 calls to justice aimed at addressing this violence; according to government figures, 163 are in progress and only two are listed as complete. Indigenous advocates and leaders, including Heidi Spence of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak and Grand Chief Kyra Wilson, argue that progress has been insufficient and that violence against Indigenous youth is escalating. The federal government countered that 171 initiatives across 28 departments have addressed the calls, including expanded culturally safe services and investments in Indigenous-led shelters.
