An 8-year-old boy named Marley helped save his grandfather after their kayak capsized off Fontygary in the Vale of Glamorgan on May 27. While Marley was able to get back onto the kayak, his grandfather Dai Jones remained in the water holding on as the pair drifted in strong Bristol Channel currents. Despite the frightening circumstances, Marley stayed calm and used a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch to contact his grandmother on shore, who immediately called 999. The pair drifted approximately two-and-a-half miles in around 25 minutes before Barry Dock RNLI's inshore lifeboat reached them near Aberthaw. Both were wearing life jackets and were safely recovered along with the kayak. Several days later, Marley was presented with a special medal by the RNLI recognizing his "calmness, courage and maturity" during the incident.
