Delhi man arrested in murder of wife and three daughters; financial distress from gambling cited as motive

Police have filed a 250-page chargesheet against Munchun Kewat, a 42-year-old vegetable vendor, for the murders of his wife Anita (30) and their three daughters aged three, four, and five in Samaypur Badli, Delhi on February 25. All four victims were found with their throats slit in their one-room house. According to the chargesheet, Kewat accumulated debts of nearly Rs 4 lakh through online gambling and betting, and was allegedly threatened by creditor Mithilesh that he would keep his wife and children to work for him. The investigation involved examining nearly 800 CCTV cameras to create a digital route map of Kewat's movements, with footage showing him purchasing a knife while wearing a distinctive orange shirt and leaving the house in the same outfit. After fleeing to Rajasthan, Kewat was arrested while still wearing the orange shirt. He confessed to investigators that he committed the murders believing his family would otherwise suffer due to the financial situation and social consequences, and stated he had contemplated suicide but was unable to follow through.
