David Hockney, widely regarded as one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, died peacefully at his home in London on 11 June 2026, one month short of his 89th birthday, his publicist Erica Bolton confirmed. Born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1937, Hockney rose to prominence in the 1960s Pop Art movement and spent much of his career in Southern California, producing iconic swimming pool paintings before returning to Europe in later life. His death marks the end of a seven-decade career spanning painting, photography, printmaking, stage design, and digital art on iPads, during which his work achieved record-breaking auction prices and drew millions of visitors to galleries worldwide.

David Hockney, born on 9 July 1937 in Bradford, England, died at his London home on 11 June 2026 at the age of 88, his publicist Erica Bolton announced. Trained at the Bradford School of Art and London's Royal College of Art — where he graduated with a Gold Medal — Hockney became a central figure in the British Pop Art movement of the 1960s and later defined the visual aesthetic of sun-drenched Southern California through luminous acrylic paintings of swimming pools, most notably 'A Bigger Splash' (1967) and 'Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)' (1972), the latter selling for $90.3 million at Christie's in 2018, a then-record for a living artist. Openly gay at a time when homosexuality was a criminal offence in Britain, he incorporated queer themes into his work from the outset, helping shift cultural attitudes through art. He never confined himself to a single medium or style, moving across portraiture, landscape, photographic collage, opera and theatre set design, and — in his final decades — digital drawings created on iPhones and iPads, including a 70-metre-long iPad artwork inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. He is survived by his longtime partner Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima, his brothers Philip and John, his great-nephew and studio assistant Richard Hockney, and numerous other relatives. Tributes poured in from King Charles, who called Hockney 'a dear friend and one of life's true originals,' as well as from Prime Minister Keir Starmer, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, and figures across the art world.

What's missing

No cause of death has been disclosed by his publicist or any source.

How coverage differed

Most outlets framed Hockney's death in celebratory, reverential terms, but emphasis differed slightly: left-leaning outlets such as The Guardian and NPR foregrounded his revolutionary challenge to conservative society and his significance as a pioneering openly gay artist, while centrist wire services like AP and outlets such as Forbes gave greater weight to his commercial record-breaking auction results and financial legacy.
