Condé Nast Sues Journalists Behind Revived Gourmet Newsletter

Condé Nast filed a lawsuit in February against Goulash Unlimited, the LLC operating a newly revived Gourmet newsletter started by five food journalists who obtained the trademark after Condé allowed it to lapse in 2021. Condé claims it still generates revenue from Gourmet-branded content on its Epicurious platform and YouTube, and that the revival damages the brand and its goodwill. The new Gourmet team argues Condé cannot prove damages and notes the company abandoned nearly all Gourmet trademarks over 17 years.
In January 2024, five food writers relaunched Gourmet as an independent, worker-owned newsletter after discovering that Condé Nast had allowed the trademark to lapse in 2021, more than a decade after shuttering the print magazine in 2009. The new Gourmet operates on Ghost, an independent newsletter platform, and has published biweekly content including recipes and feature stories on food topics. Condé Nast responded with a lawsuit in February, claiming the revival infringes on its brand and causes financial harm through lost revenue from Gourmet-branded content on Epicurious and YouTube. The new Gourmet team countered that Condé cannot prove damages and highlighted that the company had allowed all but one Gourmet federal trademark to expire over 17 years. The revived publication operates as a small, part-time collective with fewer than 10,000 subscribers and no outside investors, positioning itself as a digital alternative for home chefs and food enthusiasts.
