Commonwealth Fusion Systems Publishes Physics Research Supporting 400 MW Reactor Design

Commonwealth Fusion Systems has published five peer-reviewed papers in collaboration with academic researchers outlining the scientific foundation for its ARC (Advanced Reactor Commonwealth) fusion power plant, designed to produce 400 MW. The company's approach differs from the international consensus pathway represented by the ITER project by leveraging high-temperature superconductor technology to create more powerful magnetic fields, enabling smaller reactor designs and faster development timelines. Commonwealth's SPARC tokamak, which is over 70 percent complete and expected to operate as soon as next year, will serve as the experimental platform to validate designs before ARC construction. While the fundamental physics principles underlying the company's plans are well-established from decades of tokamak research, the peer-reviewed papers acknowledge significant remaining technical challenges that SPARC operations will need to resolve. The publication represents an attempt to demonstrate scientific credibility for the private fusion sector's claim that it can deliver commercial fusion power faster than the traditional government-led ITER pathway, which isn't expected to achieve hot plasmas until the mid-2030s.
